I have known Nick for some years during which he hunted my lovely heavyweight ex-policehorse. Max loved being ridden by him and no hedge was too big when Nick was on board.
Now Nick is a regular visitor to our yard. He coaches a variety of children for our school equestrian teams, coping admirably with the huge range of talents, and the teenage stresses, hardly blinking an eye. My daughter's stock response when a new spooky horse turns up is, "Mum, you'd better give Nick a call." He has spent hours helping the non-horsy Mums come to terms with the sport their children have chosen, whilst teaching them how to calmly and efficiently learn to help out without endangering themselves or anybody else. My own daughter would prefer to be coached by Nick before anybody else, even the dressage phase! My latest "project" is breaking my baby 17hh warmblood. Nick has been there for all the terrifying bits, encouraged, calmed and been more than positive and the result is a horse that so far has never been frightened into doing anything stupid. In fact if we have any problems it is because he is so firmly "joined up" to us on the ground he can't understand why we need to get on his back. Nick has hunted my very sharp TB ex-racehorse for me for the past few seasons. Prior to this, at home we had managed to make this quirky horse obedient to the point where he would do as asked over smallish fences provided the rider was spot on. The slightest mistake out hunting and I was usually either on the floor or trying to find a gate! His wired behaviour at the start of the day was also very stressful.
Nick somehow managed to make this horse love his job! He rode him with 'no ghosts', which was amazing considering this horse's very public history of dropping passengers, and this was transferred to the horse. He is now an absolute pleasure for ME to hunt as he is just so game to go jumping, whatever the weather or conditions. 99% of the time he will help me regardless of how I ride. His general behaviour and manners are also improved beyond recognition when out in the field. Finally, Nick doesn't get on your horse to show off how much more successful he is than you with it. He makes it manageable for you, and is delighted when his work is done and the owner can do it themselves. A refreshing person to meet. Since meeting Nick, his Bitting Service has been absolutely brilliant and I have two mares who are much happier to school and compete. We did weekly trials with a number of different Myler bits and through process of elimination with both mares we have had great results. His clinics are very informative and his methods of teaching and knowledge ensure we get the best possible results. We are looking forward to competing at The Royal International at Hickstead.

Nick Earnshaw rode my horse Viscount Barnaby out Drag Hunting as a four/five year old and managed him in a sensitive and professional manner. The horse has gone on to event and is now at intermediate level. Thank you Nick for your contribution towards his earlier education.

I have known Nick Earnshaw for 20 years. Over this period of time I have had the opportunity to work with Nick on many occasions in varied aspects of equestrian pursuits. In particular, I have assisted Nick in training his Point to Pointers (one of which was very successful with various wins and placings). I also steward under Nick at the Cranleigh Show where he is currently Chief Horse Steward.
Nick has been my instructor for many years and I have also watched him instruct at different levels of competence. He is passionate about doing the best for each horse and rider he is involved with and cares deeply that any horses he teaches or rides is happy and coping well with anything they are asked to do. Nick is a really genuine person who really wants to make a difference in equitation and is always willing to listen. He is forward thinking and quite happy to try new methods of teaching the rider or training the horse. Trish Bicknell (BHSAI), West Surrey (15 June 2007) |
